What is amp draw and why is it important for winches?
Amp draw is the amount of electrical current, measured in amperes (amps), that an electric winch consumes to operate. As the amps increase so does the heat within the motor. When looking at a winch spec please consider the number of amps required to achieve maximum pulling capacity.
Which winch models are suitable for over volting?
Any RED Winch fitted with our air brake unit is suitable for over volting.
Which direction does the air brake work?
Unlike traditional mechanical winch brakes the air brake is a true bi directional brake. His means you can mount your air brake fitted RED Winch in any orientation and the brake will work.

Do the winches come with mounting bolts?
All RED Winches are supplied with mounting bolts and washers.

Do all RED Winches need an air supply?
The HORNET2, KING COBRA, COBRA3 and EXPLORER3 winches need a compressed air supply.
On ATOM if you choose the AIR BRAKE option it will need an air supply, if you choose the mechanical brake it does not need an air supply.
NOMAD, VENTURE and HAWK do not need an air supply as they use a mechanical brake.
Why do you offer XL drums?
The XL drum offers more rope capacity but that’s not all. All winches pull at their maximum capacity on the bottom layer. The XL drum provides more bottom layer enabling you to pull for a longer distance at maximum load.
What is over volting?
Overvolting is the practice of running a motor on a higher voltage than it is rated for. The most common practice is running a 12v motor on 24v. This gives an increase in speed but DOES NOT reduce the amp draw.
Do you make custom length ropes?
All of our ropes are spliced in house from 1,000m drums of rope that we test on our own test rig to validate the MBS figures. We offer a large range of “stock” sizes that can be found here - https://red-winches.com/offers/rope/

What is an air brake?
The air brake uses spring pressure applied to a steel disc against the brake material when the winch is not in use. This applies the brake at the motor drive and stops the winch from spooling out.
The brakes work in a way that they only come off or release when a voltage is applied to the motor solenoid signal terminals. When a signal is sent to the winch to operate either forward or reverse, that same signal is used to energise the air solenoid that feeds the brake system. An air solenoid is fitted in-between the motors at the top of the winch. This is fed by an air supply from your truck or remote compressor. Min 5bar (70 PSI) required.
When you winch in or out, you energise the signal terminals on the motor Albright solenoids. This also energises the air brake solenoid valve. This then allows air to go into a specially designed chamber inside the air brake unit that releases the brake disc instantly. When you remove your winching finger from the controls, the air solenoid dumps the air, and the springs apply the brake disc onto the brake pads.
Which recovery kit do I need?
Our recovery and winch kits are named the same as our winches. For example, If you have an Adventure geared winch then our Adventure winch kit will provide you with the equipment you need with a minimum braking strain of twice the pulling capacity of your winch.

What does "backorder" mean?
If a product shows “available on backorder” or “can be backordered” this means we are currently low our out of stock however anticipate new stock soon.
You can proceed with the order and we willl fulfill it on a first-come, first-served basis and guarantee the price which is not always possible.

How much is shipping?
The cost of shipping is automatically calculated when you add your shipping destination to the shopping cart on our website.
If you are in the UK shipping is free with orders over £250.
Can I arrange my own shipping?
Yes, If you wish to arrange your own shipping please select “COLLECT IN PERSON” at checkout and leave a note with your order to let us know that you will be arranging your own shipping.
We will let you know when the goods are ready for collection along with the size and weight of the package. If after the time of order you change your mind and want your order shipped there will be an admin fee applied for this service.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY ORDER ?
Depending on what and where you are ordering from makes all the difference.
We aim to hold stock of most winch models in our standard Red & Black colours. Normally a bespoke colour order takes around 3 weeks to be built.
For deliveries we will give you all tracking information and will notify you when your order has been shipped.

VAT / TAX? How we tax you in the UK and the rest of the world
In the UK all products sold and delivered to a UK address will have VAT added at the rate ruling at the time of purchase, currently 20%
Any countries outside of the UK will not be charged any tax on the purchases. In ALL cases, customs and / or import taxes are the responsibility of the purchaser. RED Winches declares the exact quantity and value of all items shipped internationally.
Damaged Goods
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: INSPECTION
When any winch or parts are delivered the goods must be inspected thoroughly.
If any damage is found on the packaging the goods must not be signed for and a note added ‘Goods Damaged’.
If the packaging looked good but the goods have been damaged the goods must not be signed for and a note added ‘Goods Damaged’.
If you are unsure about the condition of any of our products when they are delivered to your address you must not sign for them.
Once the goods are signed for they become your responsibility and you are unfortunately unlikely to reclaim any costs or compensation from the courier company or RED Winches.
Do you ship outside the UK?
Yes! We ship to nearly every country on the planet. Simply enter your address at checkout and the best possible prices will be calculated. We cannot reduce or override these prices if you contact us.

However, occasionally we do offer discount codes and these can be obtained by subscribing to the newsletter on our website.
