Deep Dive Plasma Locks

Everything you need to know

When it comes to securing your synthetic rope to a winch drum, the method you choose is critical. At RED Winches, we developed the Plasma Lock to provide a secure, mechanical attachment that uses the rope's own tension to stay in place.

Unlike traditional bolt-on lugs, a Plasma Lock ensures your rope won’t accidentally pull off the drum, even if you've winched out to the very end or are using a high-speed free spool.

Choosing the Right Plasma Locks

We offer four distinct sizes of Plasma Locks. Choosing the right one is vital because a winch produces its maximum torque on the bottom layer. If your Plasma Lock is too long for the drum, you waste valuable pulling power on "dead" space.

1. The Original (MD01)

This is the model that started it all. It is perfectly sized for winches like the Hornet, where the drum width allows for the lock's length without compromising the first layer of rope.

2. The Mini

Designed for tighter spaces, the Mini is our go-to for standard drum low-line winches.

  • Common Applications: We supply these as standard for INEOS Grenadier winches.

  • Versatility: They are also ideal for smaller setups, including ATV and quad bike winches.

3. The Short Model (MD03)

If you need the compact footprint of a smaller lock but require extra strength for heavy-duty applications, the MD03 is the perfect middle ground. It works exceptionally well on standard-sized drums where space is at a premium.

4. The Large Diameter (MD05)

As ropes get thicker, the loops on the lock need to grow. The MD05 was specifically created for 14mm to 16mm ropes. Trying to thread a 14mm rope through a standard lock is nearly impossible; the MD05 makes it simple. It’s also the ideal match for our Hornet XL drums.

How to Fit Your Plasma Locks: A Step-by-Step Guide

Fitting a Plasma Lock is a straightforward process of "capstanning" the rope to hold itself to the drum through tension.

Step 1: Measure Your Tail

Start with your winch rope and pull out a tail of approximately 4.5 to 5 feet (about two arm lengths).

Step 2: Position the Lock

Remember that the rope must pass under the drum. For ease of installation, place the Plasma Lock on top of the drum so you can clearly see what you are doing.

Step 3: The Wrap

Pass the rope through the first loop of the lock. Continue wrapping the rope around the drum and the Plasma Lock. You want at least six wraps between the two loops of the lock.

Step 4: Secure the Tail

Once you have completed your wraps, pass the tail end through the final loop of the Plasma Lock.

Step 5: Tension is Key

Slide the assembly to the end of the drum and work out all the slack by hand.

CRITICAL: Before you head out on the trails, you must perform a "first pull" under tension. This locks the fibres onto the drum. If you skip this step, the drum may simply spin inside the rope when you need it most.

The Benefits of a Locked System

Once fitted correctly, your rope is firmly attached.

  • Safety: You cannot accidentally pull the rope off the drum, even at full extension.

  • Maintenance: Removing the rope is just as easy. Simply un-pop the tail and unwind, making it easy to take your rope off for a thorough cleaning after a muddy day in the field.
