Factors to consider when choosing the correct size for your winch rope.
Selecting the right rope size is crucial, it impacts both the performance and efficiency of your winching, as well as the safety of the operator.
About Winch Rope
A winch rope is a critical component in various pulling, towing, vehicle recovery operations, commonly used in automotive, marine, construction, and rescue industries.
It is traditionally made from steel wire rope for its strength and durability, winch ropes are now increasingly made from synthetic fibres like nylon, polyester, Kevlar aramid and UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. These modern materials offer lighter weight and enhanced safety, making them more desirable. In recent years, Synthetic winch rope has become the most sought-after option due to its superior performance and reliability.
The following factors you need to consider when choosing the right size of winch rope:
Diameter
Whether you use steel wire rope or synthetic rope, remember that a larger diameter means a higher breaking strength. To select the right winch rope diameter, consider the maximum pulling capacity of your winch and apply a safety factor of 1.5 to 2 times.
As the diameter increases, you’ll need to shorten the rope length to meet the winch’s pulling capacity to avoid overloading. Since larger diameters make the rope heavier, you might want to opt for lighter synthetic options like our RED Winches Ultimate Winch Rope. This provides high strength while being significantly lighter than steel cables.
Length
When selecting the ideal winch rope length, you need to consider the drum capacity of your winch. To reserve you more winch space and lengthen the line, we suggest opting for the lighter synthetic winch rope. RED Winches Ultimate winch rope is 80% stronger than steel cable in same diameter, allowing for longer lengths at the same pulling force, thus extending the reach of your winch pulls.
Material
The material of your winch rope is crucial, impacting its weight, safety, and convenience. Steel wire rope winch lines are heavy and rigid, making them cumbersome to handle and prone to causing hand injuries. In the event of line failure they are more likely to cause serious accidents and personal injuries.
Synthetic rope for winches, on the other hand, is lightweight, easy to handle, and improve efficiency. They don’t generate significant energy upon breaking and naturally fall to the ground, enhancing personnel safety during operations.
Steel wire rope generally has better abrasion resistance and UV resistance, so it typically has a longer lifespan compared to synthetic rope.
Cost
For the same diameter and length, synthetic winch lines are more expensive than steel wire ropes but offer significant advantages. They are lighter, easier to handle, and safer in the event of failure.
How to extend your winch cable when a longer line is needed
You can use a RED Winches winch line extension to increase the line length when needed. The winch line extension typically have two soft eyes on each end, allowing you to easily attach a hook or use a soft shackle with a S-RING for closed loop winching.
