The NOMAD2 drum is CNC machined in 3 parts. The ends are screwed onto the drum, then cross-drilled and pinned.
Why do we do this? When a drum has the ends welded on it distorts slightly due to the heat. Because all RED Winches winch drums run in sealed roller bearings instead of bushings and are fitted with a lip seal between the winch body and the drum flange. The drum must run concentric to enable the lip seal to work correctly.
The NOMAD2 is fitted with the RED Winches full drum disconnect freespool.
What is a full drum disconnect freespool? If you have ever had to pull rope from a lowline winch, you will have felt the resistance. This is because when you put a traditional lowline winch into freespool and pull the rope from the drum, you are not only rotating the drum, you are also rotating the gearbox assembly. This can make pulling the rope a difficult task. To the point where some users will just power the rope out with the motor rather than using the freespool function. Not only is this slower, but it is also consuming power from the vehicle’s batteries just before you start using the winch, and this is the exact time you want the batteries at maximum charge!
When the user puts the NOMAD2 into freespool, the drum is disconnected from the gearbox. The drum is supported in roller bearings, and the only resistance the user feels as they pull the rope from the drum is the very slightest resistance from the roller bearings. The result? No more two-handed pulls with one foot on the bumper. Just grab the rope and go!
NOMAD Winch – Available with 3 Gearing Options – Please see gallery images for related performance charts.
The NOMAD Winch offers three gearing options, each designed to suit different recovery needs, providing varying pulling capacities and line speeds:
OVERLAND
Pulling Capacity: 4,500kg (9,920 lbs)
No Load Line Speed: 17.3 m/min (56.8 ft/min)
Drum RPM – 41
ADVENTURE
Pulling Capacity: 5,500kg (12,000 lbs)
No Load Line Speed: 12.9 m/min (42.3 ft/min)
Drum RPM – 28
TITAN
Pulling Capacity: 7,500kg (16,500 lbs)
No Load Line Speed: 10.6 m/min (34.8 ft/min)
Drum RPM – 17
The pulling power of the winch depends heavily on your vehicle’s electrical setup. We recommend the following for optimal performance:
A 12V alternator with at least 180A output to charge the winch batteries.
Two 75Ah batteries to provide the necessary 12V DC supply.
High-quality 50mm² electrical cable.
Ensure clean electrical joints, and in areas prone to water exposure, apply conductive grease to protect connections.
The NOMAD2 is supplied with synthetic rope as standard. Depending on the drum size and gearing selected, the rope diameter and length vary.
Standard Drum Synthetic Rope Capacity
- Overland and Adventure gearing – 30m of 11mm RED Winches synthetic rope
- Titan gearing 25m of 12mm RED Winches synthetic rope
XL Drum Synthetic Rope Capacity
- Overland and Adventure gearing – 45m of 11mm RED Winches synthetic rope
- Titan gearing 35m of 12mm RED Winches synthetic rope
Attaching the rope to the drum is made simple with the included Plasma Lock. This secure locking mechanism ensures the synthetic rope stays firmly attached to the drum, minimising the chance of slipping or accidental detachment.
Nomad2 Standard Drum:
