Equipping the Frontline:

Building the Ultimate Recovery System for the RNLI

When the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) modernized their fleet by introducing the INEOS Grenadier as an official launch vehicle for its D-class inshore lifeboats , they required uncompromising recovery gear. Redstart Design engineered and manufactured the complete tactical recovery system: the RED Winches Nomad Low Line Winch and the bespoke SV-R INEOS Grenadier Winch Mount. Engineered and built in the UK, this ecosystem delivers ultimate pulling power while remaining fully compliant with OEM physical and electrical specifications.

The Challenge: Uncompromising Coastal Conditions

Nomad RNLI 9

When it comes to search and rescue, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) operates in some of the most unforgiving environments on earth. The British coastline presents a relentless combination of deep sand, corrosive saltwater, jagged rocks, and unpredictable tides. To navigate this terrain, the RNLI requires vehicles and equipment that are fundamentally bulletproof.

While the INEOS Grenadier is a highly capable off-road platform, a rescue vehicle is only as dependable as its recovery equipment. The RNLI needed a winch and mounting solution that could seamlessly integrate with the Grenadier while guaranteeing flawless performance when lives are on the line.

The Solution: The Nomad Winch and Custom Mount Integration To meet these extreme demands, our engineering team provided a specialized winch mount paired with the heavy-duty Nomad winch. Designed specifically for the INEOS Grenadier’s chassis, the system offers a zero-compromise approach to vehicle recovery and equipment hauling.

  • Massive Mechanical Loading: Retrieving heavy launch trailers and self-recovering vehicles from deep sand puts immense kinetic forces and structural loads onto the vehicle chassis.
  • Corrosive Environments: Constant exposure to highly corrosive marine environments accelerates the degradation of standard mechanical components.
  • Complex OEM Integration: The RNLI required a front-end recovery solution that retained the Grenadier's factory styling and advanced front-end tech, such as parking sensors.
  • Thermal Management: The system had to maintain critical airflow to the engine coolers while housing a powerhouse winch capable of relentless duty under maximum load.

The Solution: The Nomad Winch and Custom Mount Integration

To meet these extreme demands, our engineering team provided a specialized winch mount paired with the heavy-duty Nomad winch. Designed specifically for the INEOS Grenadier’s chassis, the system offers a zero-compromise approach to vehicle recovery and equipment hauling.

Our solution was chosen based on three critical factors:

  • Precision Engineering: The winch mount is designed to bolt perfectly onto the INEOS Grenadier, distributing massive pulling forces evenly across the vehicle's frame without compromising its structural integrity or approach angle.

  • Marine-Grade Durability: Saltwater is the ultimate destroyer of mechanical equipment. The Nomad winch is sealed and built to withstand total submersion and extreme coastal weather, ensuring it works exactly when it needs to.

  • Unrelenting Pulling Power: Whether hauling a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) up a steep shingle beach or recovering a stranded vehicle before the tide turns, the Nomad winch delivers the raw, consistent power required for heavy-duty marine rescue.

The Outcome: Ready for the Call

By outfitting their INEOS Grenadiers with our winch mounts and Nomad winches, the RNLI volunteers have peace of mind knowing their recovery gear is as tough as the vehicles they drive.

"In search and rescue, equipment failure is not an option. We are incredibly proud that our mounting system and the Nomad winch have been trusted to support the RNLI's life-saving missions."
